ANA and U.S. Public Health Service to Announce Nurses Response TeamWashington, DC -- The American Nurses Association (ANA) and the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) will announce a joint program for the quick deployment of a large cadre of nurses in response to a major bioterrorism event, such as last fall's anthrax attacks. The announcement will occur on June 30, 2002, at ANA's 2002 Biennial Convention in Philadelphia. As the program sponsor, the ANA will serve as the conduit to recruit registered nurses, relying on its national capacity to reach millions of nurses through its state nurses associations and specialty nursing organizations. The team of nurses will be dedicated to responding to a Presidentially declared disaster to provide mass immunization or chemoprophylaxis to a population at risk. It is estimated that any bioterrorist attack that involved even 100,000 victims would require 200 personnel working 100 hours just to deliver chemoprophylaxis. Other scenarios that involve agents that can be transmitted by person-to-person contact, such as smallpox, could require treatment vaccinations for millions of people.
# # # The American Nurses Association is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's 2.7 million Registered Nurses through its constituent member nurses associations. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
