The John A. Hartford Foundation Awards First MBA Scholarships to Nursing Scholars

The Advisory & Selection Committee of the John A. Hartford Foundation Program: Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Scholar Program announces the selection of the first two MBA Scholars. This arm of the Scholar Program seeks applicants who wish to pursue a business degree at a highly ranked institution, anticipating a career focus on the management/leadership of institutions serving the elderly.

Administered by the American Academy of Nursing and directed by Claire M. Fagin, PhD, RN, FAAN, this award program offers each MBA Scholar $50,000 to support studies at highly ranked schools of business. From a competitive pool of candidates, 2 scholars were selected this year.

Elizabeth Miller, MSN, RN, CRNP, will enter the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Miller recognized that "Wharton's Health Care Management program is matchless among MBA programs," which provides the resources with which she can integrate her clinical and research background in long-term care programs for the elderly with business management skills that are "essential for implementing systematic delivery of long-term care and influencing the development of appropriate policy."

Denise L. Jones-Baucke, PhD, RN, will enter the Executive Masters in Business Administration Program at the University of Washington. Jones-Baucke's background blends informatics with her career-long dedication to geriatrics, which led to the creation of her own company and development of a point of care technology solution for the senior care industry. This scholarship affords her the opportunity to develop the business skills needed to further develop her product for long-term care organizations so that they can "deliver more services with fewer resources while improving the health and quality of life of the aging population."

According to Fagin, "This recent action adds significant dimension to our growing cadre of nursing scholars. We are impressed with their vision and confident they will be future leaders to watch." Fagin recommends that other interested nurses look for the next call for MBA Scholar Application on the program's web site later this spring.
