ANA Nursing Information and Data Set Evaluation Center Recognizes Cerner Corporation's 'Carenet® Solutions'

Washington, DC -- The American Nurses Association (ANA) today announced the Nursing Information and Data Set Evaluation Center (NIDSECSM) recognition of CareNet® Solutions, a software application program developed by the Kansas City, MO-based Cerner Corporation, which is used by nurses and other clinicians to document and manage clinical practice activities in the acute-care setting.

Responding to the growing use of computerized information systems in health care and the need for professional standards in this area, ANA established NIDSEC in 1996. The purpose of NIDSEC is to develop standards and scoring guidelines related to nursing data and information systems, establish a recognition program, and evaluate information system solutions voluntarily submitted by developers. NIDSEC recognition lasts for three years. This is the third presentation of the NIDSEC recognition award.

"We are pleased that the Cerner Corporation's CareNet supports nursing practice and meets the NIDSEC recognition criteria evaluating the completeness, accuracy and appropriateness of nomenclature, clinical content, clinical data repository, and general system characteristics," said ANA President Barbara Blakeney, MS, APRN,BC, ANP.

"We are truly honored to receive NIDSEC recognition," said Charlotte Weaver, RN, PhD, vice president and chief nursing officer at Cerner. "CareNet Solutions is a leader in the field of nursing clinical-care data and information, and this formal recognition confirms it."

According to Weaver, the Cerner CareNet system is the only health information technology company solution holding current NIDSEC recognition. The system was designed exclusively with nurses in mind and includes patient-care-management software that allows the nurse to streamline the process of placing, receiving, monitoring and tracking orders. "From ordering lab tests to administering medications to prescribing special diets, CareNet delivers real-time decision support through its suite of applications supporting the acute-care nursing experience," said Weaver.

For further information regarding NIDSEC recognition, contact Carol J. Bickford, PhD, RN,BC, senior policy fellow, ANA Department of Nursing Practice, at 202-651-7060 or cbickfor@ana.org.
