Statement by the American Nurses Association (ANA)
In Support of the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration's
Counterfeit Alert Network
February 18, 2004

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is pleased to support the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Counterfeit Alert Network. The Counterfeit Alert Network is an important step to help increase awareness of counterfeit drugs among the nation's health care providers and safeguard the nation's drug supply. This public-private network will educate and inform key stakeholders, including consumers, of this growing threat to patient safety and serve to protect many from fraud and possible harm as a result of counterfeit drugs.

As the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation's 2.7 million registered nurses, ANA is deeply concerned with the safety and quality of care provided to the public. ANA pledges its support to facilitate FDA's dissemination of timely information to its network of registered nurses and member nurses associations. Nurses are the largest, single component of the health care system and ANA is pleased to join FDA in this step to advance the safety of health care in America.
