Fund Raising and Ice Cream Social at McGuire AFB, NJ
Good morning from the 305th Medical Group at McGuire AFB, NJ. Currently we have a total of 30 RN’s and 75 medical technicians (equivalent) to a LPN. In the Air Force we celebrate National Nurse/Medical Technician Week, since we can not support our mission of keeping a healthy force without their help and assistance. This is the second year that we are celebrating nursing with a full blast. During the last 4 months, we have had several fund raisers and all 3 events to he held during 6-12 May 2005 are cost free for all nurses and medical technicians. We start the celebration on 6 May 2005 with our Wing Commander (equivalent to a city mayor) giving the proclamation to our Chief Nurse Executive, Lt Col Tamara S. Matter; following with an ice cream social sponsored by Turkey Hill Ice Cream. On Monday 9 May, we have an informal hot dog luncheon sponsored by BJ’s Wholesale Club. On 11 May to almost end or festivities, we have a formal luncheon with a very special guest, Col Gloria J. Twilley our AMC/Command Nurse.
Thanks,

Displays and Video Montage in Leesburg, FL
At Leesburg Regional Medical Center/ The Villages Regional Medical Center/ OHME Rehabilitation and Home Care, we are celebrating nurses week in several ways. We have three facilities. We are assembling displays for everyone to enjoy in our lobbies that recognize all nurses that have achieved national certification in their fields at each facility. We are also recognizing excellence among our staff by assembling clips from our patients and their families letters that honor our nursing staff to also be displayed during nurses week. One of educators has also put together a video montage that displays the many roles...one profession, with music in the background that will play continually during nurses week to highlight for our members of the community the diverse nature of nursing. We have also initiated a nursing essay contest this year. The nurses were asked to enter an essay on "Why I love Being a Nurse" We have received several dozen responses and we will create a booklet to honor those nurses and have it available to waiting rooms and units. We appreciate the challenges that are inherent in our profession and felt that this was the week to honor our nurses. Our retired nurses community has also started a annual event that is a rededication at our local church for all nurses to rededicate themselves to the profession each year.
I feel that this is a very pro nursing community and wanted to share our activities with you.
Thank you,

Spring Fling in Clarksville, TN
At the Gateway Medical Center in Clarksville, TN the Critical Care nurses
decided to host a Spring Fling to celebrate the nursing staff. We rented a
building, engaged the most popular live band in town, provided food and
drink and encouraged all hospital staff to attend. Cost was minimal to the
attendees as we solicited donations from our physicians and encouraged them
to come as well. They came through for us in a huge way and came and danced
the night away.
2004 was our first annual Spring Fling and it was a huge success! We are
gearing up for this year's bash and the entire hospital is abuzz with
anticipation.

Our hospital system consists of two community hospitals, Upper Chesapeake Medical Center and Harford Memorial Hospital.
Both are located in Harford County, Maryland. For the third year running, we offer our nursing team members, at each facility, a “Nurture the Nurse Day”. Additionally, the committee sponsors a formal English tea complete with scones and clotted cream. The winners of our Nurse of the year, Tech of the Year, and Unit Secretary of the Year are announced during each hospital tea. Committee members wear spring attire, with lovely hats. Potluck and Gifts in McCook, Nebraska
I graduated from nursing school in July 2002. One of our clinical
activities in school included rural towns and communities. I had the good
fortune to learn and practice at McCook Community Hospital, McCook,
Nebraska. My clinical was over nurses week, so I got to observe how this
small hospital appreciated their nurses. I was impressed (coming from
Lincoln, Nebraska Bryan LGH Hospital). Every day was something different.
One day there was a potluck and everyone brought homemade dishes. One day
was cake and ice cream. But one day in particular I will never forget. My
preceptor had received a large, oddly shaped brown paper sack. She seemed
excited and giddy to open it. As she opened the sack, she pulled many
different prescious moments figurines, a prescious moments pillow, a picture
frame, and a key chain. Watching her smile, I asked her what it was. She
said that when you come to work at this hospital, the nurse supervisor asks
you to answer some questions about likes/dislikes, collections, projects,
hobbies, etc.. Throughout the year, there is a committee that shops the
sales for items on the list for gifts for nurses' week. All the nurses
receive a wanted gift. Of course, this probably would not work in a large
hospital. Doesn't this just say "we care"? How thoughtful :)

Articles and Spotlights on Nursing in Torrance, CA
I am an RN at Torrance Memorial Medical Center in Torrance, California and I work in the Emergency and Imaging Departments (CT, MRI). I make it a yearly commitment to write to our local paper The Daily Breeze every year and appear as a guest writer with a column about nursing. This year I submitted my article and it focuses on all ethnicities that enter the field of nursing. Travelers from around the world that come to work here in the United States, and nurses that travel from the east coast to the west, etc...
I also wrote an article for the LA Times, I've never written to them, but I sure hope they print my article I wrote exclusively for them. So, look for my articles about National Nurse Week this year, nursing has come a long way.
Thank you,

Bake Sale, Raffle and Walk-a-thon in Cleveland, OH
Our Medical Center has not provided any financial help to acknowledge the
role and importance of nursing. Leadership determined the budget was "too
tight".
The Nursing Office has been holding fund raising events: a bake sale, a
raffle, and a Walk-a-thon during lunch. This is all very good, but it is
the nurses who did all the baking, it is the nurses who organized and funded
the raffle, and the nurses who contributed to and walked during their lunch
time.
So, we will have a celebration for Nurses Week, but the hospital has given
us nothing. It is nurses supporting nurses, with no support from the
leadership. I find this a rather grim situation.
