I am the manager of the University
of South Alabama Federal Credit Union. The University owns three major hospitals
here in Mobile, Alabama. We are honoring our nurses during Nurses Week,
May 6-12, by giving goodie bags to our member nurses. We are stuffing the
bags with ink pens that are shaped like syringes, coin purses, candy, etc.
We are also giving away beach bags filled with sun protector and beach towels
in a special drawing. This is our fourth year to participate in Nurses Week.
We are glad to be a part of Nurses Week and will continue to support our
nurses.
Sincerely,
Betty H. Gorham Manager

As we chart our course through this Olympic Year of 2004, we must create
our own opportunities to balance our future in nursing. We must stay focused
and maintain the vision set before us, never losing sight of our mission
and goals. Progress is good an inevitable, but with it will bring us new
challenges and rewards. Nursing is to be celebrated for it's strengths
and contributions it brings to our patients. Our future is bright, so
keep the faith as we chart our course into the coming year.
We have obstacle course of nursing activities (like making a bed, emptying
a foley) and have nursing teams with their own flags. The highest scoring
teams will be awarded gold, silver, and bronze metals. Our closing ceremonies
will include a "Nursing Rap" song performed by the nursing managers honoring
Florence Nightingale and also we will present our Nightingale award to
our top three nurses which exemplify the art of nursing for our hospital.

Our community hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, celebrates with
these traditions:
Nancy Figel Recognition Award. This annual award, established in 1999
by the family of Nancy Figel and Administration of War Memorial Hospital,
recognizes the outstanding nurses that Nancy enjoyed working with while
serving as Patient Care Administrator. The selected nurse, nominated by
peers, is recognized at the Employee Service Awards dinner, receives a
$1,500 scholarship and the book Nursing, The Finest Art.
A Community Crepe Breakfast, several afternoon and night Social Hours,
and a BBQ are also held.
Our nurses are unique and wonderful in the fact that they provide wonderful,
quality care and make it a reality in our facility each and every day
throughout the year. Our residents, family members, staff, community,
and volunteers come together to honor what brings us all together. We
honor our nurses not only with a luncheon, but with a "look back" at their
contributions, sacrifices and celebrate their life-gifts, beliefs, similarities
and the memories that make their job 'rewarding", challenging, and wonderful.
Our residents and families share their stories of compassion, strength,
but most of all, heartwarming stories of our nurses humanity. Every one
of our Nurses has a gift, a talent, a personality, and a dedication to
the profession they proudly provide each and every day. We remember their
pledge before God to practice their profession faithfully in their devotion
to the welfare of those entrusted to their care. Our Nurses, our heroes,
everyday, all year long.
At Alta Vista Healthcare we will be celebrating all that encompasses The
Florence Nightingale Pledge. Residents and staff will give our Nurses
a time of reflection, a luncheon to show our thanks and appreciation.
Letters of encouragement, gifts, but most of all, we will show our love
for all they do. Thank-You for allowing us to share a bit of sunny California
celebrations at our facility with others in the nursing profession.
Warmest Regards,
Carey Van Boxtel, Administrator

& LPNs in the organization. The Senior Nurse Council is sponsoring a campus-wide
health fair for employees. Along with the health fair, there will be a
scavenger hunt amongst the vendors. Employees who participate will be
placed in a drawing for our version of an extreme makeover. The makeover
consists of a limousine ride to a local spa for pampering and makeover
along with a trip to the local mall for a shopping spree. We have planned
a nursing pride day where all nurses in the organization will wear white
along with their nursing school hats and pins. We are excited about our
"Stories from the Heart of Nurses" project in which all nursing units
will decorate story boards with stories written by nurses to tell why
they love being a Shands Nurse. These boards will be displayed throughout
the campus in honor of nurses week. In honor of the men & women serving
our country, we will have a military nurse mannequin displayed in our
front lobby along with a poster for staff to sign to send messages to

To celebrate nurses week at the
Lienhard School of Nursing, we have a "Pre Nurses Week Luncheon." We celebrate
nurses week one week ahead because final exams occur during the nurses week
and we want as many students to participate.
This year at the Pre nurses Week Luncheon we will have a short presentation
about the history of the Lienhard School of Nursing, given by noted nurse
historian and professor emeritus, Dr. Wanda Hiestand. Following the presentation
and discussion, we will ask students, faculty and guests to speak about
what they love about nursing. Dr. Sandy Lewenson, Associate Dean for the
School of Nursing, "MCs" this event. She dresses in historical nursing
uniform and with a portable microphone mingles with the audience to hear
their response to this question. For each response from students, a prize
(eg. gift certificate, nursing books, or nursing photos) are given. She
also asks nursing trivia questions, like who is Lillian Wald or when was
the first nursing registration law passed, to increase students awareness
of nursing's illustrious past. Students win prizes for their response
to these questions.
Students, faculty and guests are treated to a fabulous lunch and a wonderful
cake donated by the Lienhard School of Nursing Center for Nursing Research,
Clinical Practice and International Affairs.
The joy of nursing is celebrated and passed on to our students.
In Brunswick, Georgia, District 21 is working hard to get ready for
Nurses Week, First the committee met in Feb and again in March to discuss
and finalize some of the plans as this is what's going on. On Thursday
May 6 the Mayors of all 3 counties we represent will proclaim National
Nurse Week for May 6-12, 2004 and this will run in Friday the 7th newspaper
with photos of nurses and Mayors. Each day the radio station will accept
call-ins recognizing nurses or just plain and simple thank yours from
family members, patients and co-workers. At the end of the week a gift
will be awarded to a lucky nurse whose name will be drawn by the radio
station. To reach the community we will have a community page dedicated
to outstanding nurses in our area where you can send notes to the newspaper
for publishing. To end the week we are celebrating with a nice semi-formal
banquet at the King and Prince Beach Resort on beautiful St. Simons Island,
Georgia where nurses will be pampered and waited on hand and foot. What
better way to say thanks for all the hard work and dedication our nurses
provide us on a daily basis.
We're a community health center in East Harlem in NYC. There are ten
nurses (LPN's, RN's, NP's, CNM's) and 7 MA's. We struggled last year and
decided to include the MA's in the celebration. We had a nice breakfast
during the general staff meeting, I read a poem that included each of
the participants, and we took pictures. This year we're in the same quadry
about whether to include the MA's. The dynamics can be tricky, but I'm
inclined to include everyone who is included in the nursing department.
Do you have any advice about this? Also, can you send me the information
kit for the day that was mentioned on the web site. Thank you for your
time and consideration.

attracted local media attention not to mention onlookers from all areas
of the hospital, (we might sell tickets this year), also we get theRN'S

the hospital to those units which we deal most directly with. We also feed
our nurses at no cost to them , something different is brought in each day
of that week. We decorate our unit to reflect the pride we have in our nurses
and our program.the Nurses week is a time for us to shine and shine we do

of nursing. Our objectives are to explore ways to promote nursing, facilitate
growth within the profession, identify strategies that will nourish the
nurse and build community support among fellow nurses. Our program includes
a poster presentation, artwork created by nurses, nurses who practice the
healing arts (massage therapy, guided imagery, healing touch) and nurses
stories from our region. Guest speaker Sharon Hudacek is talking about nurses
nationwide.
