When the terrorist attacks occurred on September 11, Illinois Nurses Association member Deborah Adelman knew that the high-level skills she developed over 20-plus years as a Red Cross disaster response nurse would be desperately needed.
What she didn't bargain for was the action taken by her employer, St. John's College, a small liberal arts institution in Springfield, IL; St. John's fired her, citing "job abandonment" after she helped out in the wake of the attacks.
