![]() STRESS! -- It's everywhere! And it can be managed! By Susan Trossman, RN
Registered nurse DeeDee Bloch knows what stresses her out: Having to say "no" to a colleague who asks for help. As a staff nurse on her Minneapolis-area hospital's "flying squad," Bloch pinch-hits whenever and wherever her expertise as an RN is needed -- be it performing conscious sedation in the CT room or helping a nurse on another unit with a difficult cath. Her services are in such demand that she has to turn down requests. "When I say 'no,' I can hear the frustration in my colleagues' voices," Bloch said. "I have to decide who needs help the most." Bloch is not alone in her occupational juggling act. House of Delegates passes historic measures moving association into next millennium
In a historic movement reminiscent of the association's creation more than 100 years ago, the ANA House of Delegates passed bylaws changes designed to ensure the ANA's viability and strengthen the nursing profession as it moves into the next millennium. Working under the theme "ANA 2000: A New Association for A New Millennium," the House approved the reshaping of the association to focus on membership growth and critical health care policy advocacy. The bylaws changes reinforce ANA's overarching commitment to professional practice advocacy for the nation's 2.6 million registered nurses. Professional practice advocacy embraces activities including education, lobbying, and advocating individually and collectively in order to advance nursing's agenda.
